Programme description
The programme focuses on key areas of modern life sciences, including cell and molecular biology, human biology, genetics, microbiology, and advanced analytical techniques, with a strong emphasis on applied aspects such as genetic engineering and biotechnology. Students gain practical experience in translating fundamental biological concepts into real-world applications.
Students benefit from hands-on training using state-of-the-art methods, delivered in small group settings and supported by well-equipped laboratory facilities.
In the third year, students can tailor their studies by selecting from a range of elective modules, engaging in practical projects, and conducting research across diverse scientific disciplines. The programme is taught entirely in English and comprises 180 ECTS credits.
Teaching is closely linked to the department’s active research environment. Current research topics and approaches are integrated into the curriculum, and students have opportunities to gain early insight into scientific work through practical courses and project-based learning.
A dedicated mobility window in the fifth and/or sixth semester enables students to gain international experience. They are strongly encouraged to spend one or two semesters at a partner university. Selected partner institutions also offer opportunities to obtain a double degree.
Programme structure
During the first year of the programme, students take courses in chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics, cell biology, human biology, and microbiology. From the second year onwards, courses focus on molecular genetics, biochemistry, medical microbiology, and immunology. Elective modules provide insights into specialised fields of biology and biomedicine.
Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, and—most importantly—hands-on laboratory practicals, which form a central part of the learning experience. The programme is supported by a modern digital learning environment, including an online platform and interactive teaching tools. At the same time, it is firmly rooted in on-campus teaching, offering students a vibrant academic setting with access to excellent facilities, including a well-equipped library designed for both individual study and collaborative group work.
The Bachelor's thesis includes a three-month placement in a research group or company and provides students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a research or development context. Students may also choose to spend their fifth and/or sixth semester at one of our partner universities abroad, with the option to obtain a dual degree.

International elements in the curriculum
The curriculum of this study programme includes international elements that support global perspectives and cross-cultural learning:
- Language training provided
- Training in intercultural skills
- International guest lecturers
- Integrated/optional study abroad unit(s)
A mobility window is incorporated into the third year of the programme. Students may spend the fifth semester abroad at one of the department’s many partner universities, where well-established collaborations ensure a smooth academic experience. For those seeking a longer international stay, it is also possible to spend the entire third year abroad.
In addition, students have the option to complete their practical training period in the sixth semester in an international setting, for example, in a research institution or company abroad.
While students are encouraged to choose from the department’s network of partner universities, they are also free to organise an exchange with a university of their own choice. The department’s “Team International,” together with the International Office, provides comprehensive support in planning and organising all international study and placement opportunities.
- Specialist literature in other languages
The programme is embedded in an international environment and actively supports students in developing global and intercultural competencies. During their first year, students take mandatory language courses. In addition to English, the university offers classes in German, Spanish, Italian, Norwegian, and Dutch. Further language training, including courses in academic writing, can be taken as electives. Students who are able to attend classes at the Sankt Augustin campus may also enrol in non-European language courses.
International students benefit from a comprehensive support network, including the International Office, a study buddy programme, and the department’s dedicated “Team International,” helping them to settle into both academic and everyday life.
Intercultural training is integrated into the programme and delivered by experienced instructors from the Language Centre. The department maintains an extensive network of partner universities worldwide, fostering regular academic exchange. Visiting lecturers and researchers from abroad frequently contribute to teaching and campus life through guest lectures and scientific talks, creating a truly international learning atmosphere.
Integrated internships
During the sixth semester, students undertake a three-month practical training period in a research group, either on campus or at universities or research institutes in Germany or abroad. Many students choose to complete this phase at one of the department’s partner institutions internationally.
During this period, students work as active members of a research team, contributing to an ongoing scientific project under supervision. Rather than completing predefined exercises, they engage with a real research question, gaining first-hand experience of how scientific knowledge is generated. The skills required for this work are developed throughout the programme in preceding courses and laboratory training.
The practical phase allows students to deepen the specific interests they have developed during their studies and to prepare for future careers in science or related fields. The data generated during this period form the basis of the Bachelor’s thesis, which students compile and submit at the end of the semester.
